Colon Resection Surgery

There are several different types of colon cancer surgery that you could be facing.  Colon resection surgery is actually one of the more common types in which part of the colon is removed and the colon pieces are reattached to each other.  Proper preparation for your surgery according to your doctor’s instructions is very important in order for this surgery to go through without too much of a problem.  Your postoperative instructions will also need to be followed, such as bed rest and a necessary change in dietary habits.  By doing so, you will recover faster and take away some of the chances of the cancer returning.

Colon Surgery Complications

Even though surgery on the digestive tract is a fairly common occurrence, Colon surgery complications still take place.  Most of these complications occur as a result of improper preparation or lack of following postoperative procedures.  The most common types of problems that occur come in the form of infections and blockages.  Most infections can be treated by the use of antibiotics and a partial blockage causes an inconvenience at best.  A total blockage, however, is an emergency situation and you will probably have to go in for surgery in order to remove the blockage as soon as possible.

After Colon Cancer Surgery

Preparing for colon surgery can be a very stressful time in your life.  Following the instructions after Colon Cancer surgery can also be stressful but they are necessary if you want to lessen the possibility of a recurrence or prolonged recovery time.  Some of the things that you’re going to have to do after your surgery is complete include bed rest, dietary changes and perhaps even exercise after your recovery has advanced to some degree.  If you follow your doctor’s instructions, however, you will be less likely to have a recurrence of the disease in the future and your recovery time will be as small as possible.
